Work Area: Wireless and OpticalCommunications

Description of the work to becarried out: Hybrid fibre-radio technology is a very attractive system conceptto support the deployment of broadband microwave wireless communicationssystems. In this frequency band Gb/s data rates are possible only if cell sizeis reduced considerably. The so-called pico-cellular optical-wireless accesswith few meters range cells are being considered as a highly promising routefor delivering high bandwidth and mobility access for in-building applications.A major challenge towards economically viable pico-cellular RoF networks is toimplement low cost cell transponders with high efficient electrical and opticalfunctionalities. In this project it is proposed to investigate electricaloptical (E/O) uplink and optical-electrical (O/E) downlink transponderfunctions using non-linear circuits based on the integration of resonant tunnelingdiode (RTD) oscillators with laser diodes (LD) and photo-detectors (PDs),respectively. The main advantages of these circuits are their intrinsic RFsignals amplification and circuit simplicity, which makes them low-cost andmore reliable.

Objectives to be accomplished bythe Grant holder: Collaboration in the characterization of the optoelectronicconverters based on the RTD diode and determination of the optimum operatingconditions for clock recovery in optical systems at Gb/s transmission rates. Design, implementation, characterization and demonstration of RTD-based transceiversoperating at 2.4 GHz. Test-bed demonstrations of optical-wireless RoFcommunication links based on the optoelectronic transceivers developed.
